The Big Buddy Program is a non-profit youth organization that is committed to providing positive role models in the lives of the youth we serve. We believe that it is important for every child to have a positive role model leading him or her to make good choices resulting in a healthy, rewarding life.

To that end, the Big Buddy Program sets up programs that follow our children from elementary school all the way through college. We match kids with a caring adult, we provide kids with the opportunity to participate in positive activities and rich learning experiences in a safe and caring environment, and we provide creative, dynamic, safe forums for teens to develop literacy and life skills.
Our staff is amazing at making all of the programs we run possible, but we would not be able to be as successful if it were not for our volunteers. Volunteers are a vital resource to the programs and services provided to our youth, as they bring their talents and skills to every aspect of our programs.

Interested in volunteering? Here’s how you can help Big Buddy continue its success:

[dropcap3]1[/dropcap3] Be a mentor. The single most effective way to impact a child’s life is through a meaningful relationship that builds self-esteem and supports their overall growth and development.

  • 6 month commitment. 4 hours/mo.

[dropcap3]2[/dropcap3]Event volunteering. Throughout the year, Big Buddy hosts a number of events that help with fund raising or showcase our kids’ talents. Volunteers are important in making these events a success.

  • 1-2 hrs/wk for the duration of the event.

[dropcap3]3[/dropcap3] Program volunteering. What better way to see first-hand how our programs impact our youth? You can be a part of that impact by contributing your time and skills at one of our programs.

  • 1-2 hrs/wk for the duration of the program. Program opportunities include tutoring, art, music, dance, culinary arts, character building, and much more.

[dropcap3]4[/dropcap3] Service Learning. High school and college students have the opportunity to volunteer their time at the Big Buddy office or at one of our sites.

  • Commitment requirement as required by school or organization.

For more information, or if you are interested in volunteering with Big Buddy, contact Laurie Hardison at the Big Buddy office (388-9737), or you may email events@bigbuddyprogram.org.

  1. Hi I’ve always been someone who love helping others especially our younger generation and I was curious as to how do you become a mentor. Also, I work most til 4:30 or 6 and wanted to if it was even possible to volunteer or be a mentor considering my work schedule?

    • Thanks so much for your interest! We love hearing from people excited about helping others! Being a Mentor is an amazing way to give some time and energy to a child who needs a special friend. If you have 6 hours a month, then you have time to be a Mentor! You can go ahead and fill out the Mentor Interest Form, and someone from our staff will contact you about the Mentoring process, experience, commitment, and any other questions you may have. Check out our Mentoring page for more information.

  2. How old do you have to be to Volunteer? I have a daughter who is 15 she would love to help out during the summer…..

    • Many of our Volunteers are in high school, and they like helping out at sites, reading to our elementary students, or offering time in the office. She can call our office at (225) 388-9737 and ask about Volunteer opportunities this summer.
