One of the largest spoken word poetry competitions in the country, the All City Poetry Slam Festival will feature 13 teams, representing a variety of schools and youth organizations from the Capital Region. Students competing in the festival compose original poems which they perform for an audience of their piers as well as judges selected from the community. Poems are scored on a scale of 1-10 with all teams competing in two preliminary bouts. The top 5 teams as well as the top 6 individual poets not on one of these teams, earn the right to compete at finals night, Sunday, May 15th at the Shaver Theatre on the LSU campus. The top six overall poets from the event will represent Baton Rouge at the International Brave New Voices competition in San Francisco. Over 1500 students and community members attend the festival each year. In addition to the bouts, there are also writing workshops, open mics, a youth town hall and the 2nd annual Back Talk event where youth are partnered with adult artists to create dynamic mixed media performances.
